Electric Iron, 1930s

Handling care: will break if dropped, handle over a padded cover or table.

Electric irons completely changed domestic life, allowing clothes to be ironed quickly and safely. Gas irons were still being sold when this iron was used, in the 1930s. However electric irons proved to be safer and more hygienic. Early electric irons like this one did not have temperature control, so they cooled quickly and did not allow the user to change the temperature for different fabrics.

The manufacturer is Stronlite, a company that we think is linked to a Japanese manufacturer Seki. Japan was racing forward in technology in the 1920s & 1930s so we did import lots of items until relations changed because of the Second World War.
